A South Carolina truck driver has pleaded guilty in a 2022 crash on the West Virginia Turnpike that resulted in pollutants spilling into Paint Creek. Dennis Eugene West of Moncks Corner, S.C., pleaded guilty on Thursday to negligent discharge of pollutants in the August 2022 crash that spilled thousands of gallons of a corrosive cleaning fluid into the nearby creek killing wildlife in the creek and polluting drinking water for area residents., according to U.S. District Court records. Tests taken after the crash indicated West was driving under the influence. The plea is to a federal misdemeanor charge and is considered a violation of the Clean Water Act.
