Four Charleston attorneys filed a letter with city officials accusing a Charleston police officer and members of a now-disbanded unit of excessive force and other misconduct, prompting a new review by the department that found no policy violations. The Nov. 12 letter, was sent to the Charleston Police Department’s Professional Standards Division, Charleston City Council, and the city attorney’s office. The attorneys allege that officer Wyatt McCabe and former members of the department’s Special Enforcement Unit, were involved in four incidents dating back to 2023, which they claim demonstrate a pattern of unlawful force and dishonest reporting. “These actions demonstrate a disturbing pattern of misconduct, excessive force, civil-rights violations, and apparent attempts to falsify official reports and testimony to conceal or justify these actions,” the letter stated.
