Fire destroys historic manion

A fire early Wednesday morning destroyed much of a historic West Virginia mansion in Brooke County. The 100-room Vancroft Mansion, also known as Aspen Manor and the Knights of St. George mansion, caught fire just after midnight. The 54,000-square-foot estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fire crews from several counties in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania battled the blaze for more than seven hours. Responders say the mansion was fully engulfed when they arrived, and crews had to haul water from the Ohio River because local hydrants were dry.

The cause is under investigation.
