MSHA submits preliminary report on Nicholas County mine disaster

A West Virginia miner was killed within minutes of a mine accident earlier this month at a Nicholas County site, a federal report said. Steven Lipscomb, 42, of Elkview died 10 minutes after the Rolling Thunder Mine near Drennen became inundated with millions of gallons of water on Nov. 8, according to a preliminary accident report issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The report said 24 workers were in the mine at the time of the incident. Alpha Metallurgical Resources, which owns the mine, said in a news release Lipscomb was last seen attempting to ensure his crew made it out safely. No other injuries were reported. The body of Lipscomb, who was a foreman at the mine, was recovered after more than five days of searching that required millions of gallons of water to be pumped out of the mine.
