Charleston church combines organ history with modern technology

One of Charleston’s historic churches is blending old and new as it nears completion of a major organ installation. Christ Church United Methodist is installing a state-of-the-art antiphonal organ that will deliver a surround sound experience throughout the sanctuary. While the technology is modern, many of the pipes date back more than 120 years to the church’s first organ, purchased in 1903. About three thousand pipes will be used, connected through fiber-optic technology that allows them to be placed around the room. After years of planning and restoration, the project is nearly finished, with final tuning still underway. Church leaders say the organ will debut soon.
