Officer Cassie Johnson is remembered on the anniversary of her death

Wednesday marked the 5-year anniversary of the death of Police Officer Cassie Johnson, who passed away after being shot while responding to a parking complaint on Garrison Avenue. Johnson was wounded by Joshua Phillips but managed to return fire before he was captured. She died two days later, on December 3, 2020. Since then, Garrison Avenue has been renamed Patrolman Cassie Johnson Avenue, and a memorial scholarship was created in her name. Phillips was convicted of second-degree murder in 2022 and sentenced to 40 years. Lawmakers later passed the Cassie Marie Johnson Act, increasing penalties for killing an officer or first responder.
