Two face charges after drugs are found in their hotel room

Two people are facing charges after police say methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found within reach of a young child inside a Kanawha County hotel room.

Court records say 41-year-old Amanda Oakes and 35-year-old Shaun Shamblin, both of Charleston, are charged with child neglect creating a risk of bodily injury.

Charleston police responded Monday to a hotel along MacCorkle Avenue Southeast to serve an arrest warrant for Oakes. During the arrest, officers say a needle cap was spotted, leading to a search of the room.

Investigators say two uncapped, loaded needles of methamphetamine were found in a bathroom accessible to a 5-year-old child, along with burnt foil and a bloody towel.

Oakes also faces additional drug and firearm charges. Both suspects are being held at South Central Regional Jail pending court proceedings.
