50 new citizens naturalized in Charleston ceremony

Pride was evident as 50 people from 27 different countries became U.S. citizens in a Charleston federal courtroom Friday.Those naturalized got a sobering warning from headlines mentioning a top U.S. jurist about the responsibilities they’ll face as Americans. Arrests by ICE and days of demonstrations against immigration agents have left Minnesota cities tense. The contrast with Charleston was sharp in the wake of an enforcement surge that led to the fatal shooting of a woman last week in Minneapolis. The keynote speaker at the Charleston ceremony heads an appeals court one level below the U.S. Supreme Court. The first stop for many of the new citizens was to register to vote.
