Lawmakers seek to help West Virginians with utility bills

Bringing down high electric bills is a top priority for West Virginia House Democrats this legislative session. The focus comes after their kitchen table tour, where residents across the state said the rising cost of living, especially power bills, is a major concern.

Lawmakers say last year’s spike in electric bills was driven by higher fuel costs and unusually cold weather. In response, House Democrats are proposing a multi-part plan that includes freezing electric rates until mid-2027 to give the legislature time to act.

They also want to reform the Public Service Commission by strengthening ethics rules and shifting its focus toward consumer interests. Another proposal would make PSC commissioners elected, rather than appointed, to increase accountability to ratepayers statewide.
