Charleston leaders are weighing what to do with the Municipal Auditorium, which has been closed for nearly two years because of electrical and structural problems.
A new study shows the building’s façade is mostly in good condition, with only minor deterioration. City officials say one option would be to preserve the façade as a standalone structure, but that could cost nearly one-and-a-half million dollars and take up much of the property.
Another option would keep the façade while building a new auditorium, adding about five million dollars to an estimated 25-million-dollar rebuild. City leaders say a new venue could seat up to 3,000 people and offer more flexible, modern spaces. City officials plan to review options with architects in the coming weeks.
