School funding could be a priority for lawmakers this session

The West Virginia Board of Education is urging lawmakers to change how public schools are funded. During Wednesday’s meeting, the board heard from several counties under state control, some facing school consolidations. Officials say the current school aid formula, which favors counties with more than 1,400 students and higher property values, creates funding imbalances. Board President Paul Hardesty says the system creates “haves and have-nots,” especially in large, rural counties with fewer students. The board is asking the legislature to revisit the formula during this session.
