A West Virginia lawmaker has resigned from a key Senate leadership role following a disagreement with the Senate president.
Republican Senator Laura Chapman stepped down Tuesday as chair of the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee, citing pressure from Senate President Randy Smith.
In a letter, Chapman said she refused to promise her support to Smith, adding her vote belongs to the people of the Northern Panhandle, not other lawmakers or special interests. Chapman has served in the Senate since 2022. Senator Brian Helton has been named the new committee chair.
