Tips welcome in Wayne County oil spill investigation

As crews continue working to restore clean water in Wayne County following last week’s oil spill, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what caused it. Officials say the spill was the result of vandalism at Appalachian Power’s East Lynn substation, which led to oil leaking into Camp Creek and eventually toward Twelvepole Creek. State environmental officials estimate nearly 4,900 gallons of what is believed to be non-PCB fluid were released. Wayne Mayor Danny Grace issued a “Do Not Consume” water order after residents reported odors in their water and it’s still in effect. Sheriff Eddie Bradshaw says there are no suspects yet, but investigators are following up on tips and leads. He says potential charges could range from misdemeanors to felonies once the investigation is complete.
