Barboursville to remove sewage lagoon to make room for economic development

The village of Barboursville is in the early stages of phasing out its longtime sewage treatment lagoon, a move leaders say will open the door for economic development.

Mayor Chris Tatum says once the project is complete, about 22 acres will be available — with up to 17 acres of usable land located just off the interstate. Eyewitness News said he calls the highly visible property a prime spot for future business growth near Tanyard Station.

Waste from the current lagoon system will be redirected to the Pea Ridge Public Service District. Funding is coming from local, county and federal partners. Tatum says that support will help prevent future rate increases for residents.
