The Kanawha County Commission is working to finalize its annual budget, but commissioners still face a $700,000 deficit.
Commissioner Lance Wheeler said budget requests from internal offices and outside agencies total nearly $500,000. If fully approved, Eyewitness News said that would push new spending close to $1.5 million. Meanwhile, revenues have increased by just $300,000.
Commissioners also expect a $500,000 jump in jail costs and another $500,000 increase in PEIA expenses — adding up to a $1 million challenge.
Among the larger requests: the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is seeking a new staff member to help manage a rise in child abuse and neglect cases. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is requesting a $130,000 increase, citing higher software and vehicle maintenance costs.
Commissioners are expected to approve final numbers by the end of March. The new budget takes effect July 1.
