New bill would drop high school P.E. requirement

Student-athletes in middle and high schools across West Virginia could soon be allowed to skip physical education classes.

On Monday, the state Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 804. The proposal would let student-athletes take elective courses instead of traditional gym classes.

Back in December, five county superintendents told lawmakers the change would help reduce the physical strain on students who are already active in school sports.

The bill’s lead sponsor, Senate Education Committee Chair Amy Grady, argues it doesn’t make sense to require a P.E. credit when student-athletes may prefer other course options.

The bill now heads to the House. If approved and signed into law, it would take effect in the 2026–27 school year.
