School districts ponder how to deal with snow day make-ups

Last week’s winter storm and extreme cold kept students across the region home from school — but those days will have to be made up before summer break.

How that happens depends on the district. In Johnson County, Kentucky, schools have already closed 13 days this year due to weather. Assistant Superintendent Noel Crum told Eyewitness News seven of those days were non-traditional instruction days, while six were traditional snow days. He adds winter closures can also impact spring events, including graduation.

School calendar requirements vary by state. West Virginia requires 180 days. In Kentucky, each weather-related closure adds another day to the school year.
