State help is available for those who struggle to pay utility bills

A new program is now open to help low-income West Virginians cover home heating costs. The Department of Human Services is accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, or LIEAP. The federally funded program provides help based on income, household size, and heating expenses. For fiscal year 2026, eligibility is set at sixty percent of the state median income, with higher limits for larger households. Applications will be accepted from February second through the twentieth, or until funding runs out. More information is available through local DHS offices or online.
