Women’s swim program to be eliminated at Marshall University

The Marshall University Board of Governors voted this week to eliminate the women’s swimming and diving program.

Athletic Director Gerald Harrison said the team operates on an $819,000 annual budget and competes in facilities that don’t meet NCAA standards. He said the university can’t afford the upgrades needed to sustain the program. The board approved the recommendation unanimously.

President Brad D. Smith said the decision was timed to align with the NCAA transfer portal window, giving athletes options. At least 17 swimmers have already entered the portal, and those who stay will keep their scholarships.

Marshall plans to add stunt, a sport derived from cheerleading, to remain compliant with NCAA Division I requirements.
