Kanawha County Commission disputes rate hike for Mountaineer Gas

The Kanawha County Commission is opposed to a proposed utility rate hike that represents an 8.4% increase for residential customers. Earlier this week, Kanawha officials submitted a letter to the West Virginia Public Service Commission, asking regulators to deny a $28.8 million annual revenue increase sought by Mountaineer Gas. The commission noted customers have been subjected to multiple increases in the past few months, including a purchased gas cost adjustment in November of last year and an infrastructure-related increase that took effect at the beginning of 2026.Records said Mountaineer Gas’ average monthly residential bill has increased by more than 33% since 2016.
