Lawmakers rush to complete budget to be able to override any line itrm vetoes

West Virginia lawmakers finished a $5.5 billion budget well ahead of the end of the legislative session. Senate Bill 250 completed legislation Thursday, nine days before the end of the 2026 regular session on March 14. The intention behind passing the budget early was so that lawmakers would have the opportunity to override any line-item vetoes by Gov. Patrick Morrisey. In 2025, Morrisey used the line-item veto 29 times. The budget includes a 3% raise for public employees and allows for a 5% personal income tax cut. The governor has called for a 10% tax cut.
