Real Estate Fraud could cost a man 1-10 years in prison

A man is facing up to a decade in prison for his role in a fraudulent real estate scheme in Charleston, deputies said. Jesse Ian Smith pleaded guilty to obtaining money by false pretenses, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s office. The release said Smith worked with others to create a deed for a property along Martins Branch Road with a fraudulent notary stamp and forged signatures. Investigators said the deed was used to transfer property ownership and collect $10,000 from a buyer. According to deputies, Smith will spend 1-to-10 years in prison. That time will be served concurrently with a separate felony sentence. Deputies said the plea agreement dismissed additional charges and the matter of restitution is under consideration.
