Shawness State football program hires its very first coach

Shawnee State University introduced Mark Snyder as the school’s first head football coach during a press conference Wednesday morning.

Snyder will spend the next couple of years building the program, with the Bears’ first football season scheduled for 2028. The South Point native previously served as head coach at Marshall University from 2005 to 2009, where he also played safety.

He also won a national championship as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator during the 2002 season and has held several college assistant coaching roles since leaving Marshall, most recently in the XFL.

Shawnee State is expected to become a full NCAA Division II member by 2028 and will join the Mountain East Conference this summer.
