Trial date is set for a man accused of murdering his wife

A man accused of murdering his wife in Kanawha County will remain in jail until trial.

Jason Phillips faces first-degree murder charges in the death of Joanna Phillips, who investigators said was struck with a shotgun after months of arguing. At the time, Phillips was out on a personal recognizance bond for alleged domestic battery that prohibited contact with the victim.

Judge Tera Salango denied a bond reduction Tuesday and set the trial for Aug. 30. The case inspired the Joanna Phillips Domestic Violence Prevention Act, which increases penalties and bail requirements in domestic violence cases.
