West Virginia’s distracted driving laws now include harsher penalties

The Robin Ames Memorial Act was passed during this year’s legislative session that outlaws not just cell phone use while driving but any type of modern device such as a tablet and creates stricter penalties for those who injure or kill someone while driving distracted. The legislation went into effect on June 9 and is named to honor the life of Robin Ames who was hit and killed by a distracted driver while riding a bike in 2020 in Preston County. Dstracted driving is one the leading causes of crashes in West Virginia.
