Demolition will begin this week to start taking down the old Macy’s building at Charleston Town Center to make room for the Capital Sports Complex. The new athletic attraction has been a Kanawha County and city of Charleston effort since 2022. Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango told Eyewitness News that this is the largest project the city and the county have ever done together. Demolition will officially begin on Thursday. The city and county have both pitched in $5 million each, and $2 million has been earmarked from the federal government.. The rest will be bonded. Though construction costs could change, it is expected to cost in total $80 million for the first phase. The demolition process will take up to eight weeks. The design phase could take up to a year, and then construction of the first phase in the Macy’s lot is expected to finish in 2027.
