More than one-hundred cities across West Virginia will hold municipal elections today. The turnout in local elections is historically very low. Polls will be open today from 6:30 to 7:30.

Lawmakers approve $150 million for road repairs

West Virginia lawmakers approved the Department of Transportation’s request for 150-million-dollars to repair roads across the state. The legislature met in special session yesterday to allocate federal relief funds to the Department of Education and to the Department of Health and Human Resources.

Kanawaha County Schools building outdoor classrooms

The Kanawha County Board of Education is allocating two-point-six-million-dollars to build outdoor classrooms. The board also voted to add additional maintenance jobs. Many of the district’s buildings are more than one-hundred-years old, and maintenance is one of the biggest complaints.

Construction material catches fire at Dunbar Middle School

Construction materials, stored in the Dunbar Middle School parking lot, caught fire and spread quickly. Heat from the fire damaged a nearby home and scorched the side of a fire truck. The fire engulfed the entire parking lot, and investigators are concerned that there are other schools with building materials stored in the same way.

Moore sworn in to Charleston City Council

Larry Moore is now on Charleston City Council. He replaces Tiffany Wesley-Plear who resigned to take a job with the state. Moore represents Ward-4 and will also serve on the Public Safety Committee and the Economic Development and Urban Renewal Committee.

Charleston City Council passes CROWN Act

Charleston City Council passed an anti-discrimination measure called the Crown Act. The resolution protects hair styles, commonly associated with race, likes braids and twists. The ACLU says women of color regularly find their hair policed by dress codes in schools, at work, and during sports.

Fire Near Dunbar Middle School is Under Investigation

Kanawha County dispatchers confirmed that a fire broke out about 10:40 p.m. Sunday by Dunbar Middle School. Dunbar police said some materials that were in a Dunbar Middle School parking lot caught fire, but there was no damage to the school.
